Why An Ankle Gun Holster Is A Good Idea

An ankle gun holster is a good idea on many levels. For people in law enforcement or someone in the private security industry, having an extra firearm can save your life in a pinch. We have all seen movies where a person is in a bad position and they quietly reach down, unlock their ankle holster, and before you know it they have the situation under control. While these are of course just movies, the idea is sound.

Back in the wild west, you were often not allowed to carry a gun in town; you had to give up your weapon to the Sheriff until you were ready to leave, so many people would conceal another weapon in their boot, just in case, so here is where the first ankle gun holsters came from. Of course back then it was quite uncomfortable and downright dangerous to carry a gun in your boot, you could accidentally shoot yourself in the foot and you could get bruised from the gun banging around against your leg.

While having an ankle gun holster is a great idea, there are some things you should know. If you are looking to buy an ankle holster, check around carefully. You want a holster that is going to fit snugly, but comfortably around your ankle. If you decide to buy one that has Velcro, make sure that this Velcro pad is large enough that it won't start opening just by your movements. Make sure there is adequate padding on the inside of the holster so you can carry your concealed weapon around without causing a bruise on your ankle. You want one that is not only going to keep your weapon secure, but one you don't have to fumble with when you need it. Let's face it, if you need to reach down and get your reserve weapon, it is going to be in a dangerous situation and the few extra seconds you spend trying to get out your gun can make you vulnerable.

There are a number of different people who may use an ankle gun holster. An ankle holster can be used by the military or law enforcement. For police officers', carrying a concealed weapon means that even if you are not in uniform, you have a weapon in case it is needed. There are many television reality programs where a person comes into a convenience store to rob the place and there happens to be a customer who is an off duty police officer shopping. They take out their reserve gun from their ankle holster and defuse the situation right away. Those that want to protect their family can do so without anyone else knowing they are carrying.

These are just a few of the many reasons why an ankle gun holster can be a good idea. Whether it is protecting your family, having a reserve weapon in case of an emergency or just for peace of mind, and ankle holster can be a valuable tool to help you protect yourself.
